This heart-shaped leaf also has the likeness of a phoenix’s wings. It is inspired by the Paulownia coreana tree–the royal (princess) foxglove tree–which is known for its heart-shaped leaves and white or purple blossom clusters. This design is an intricate symbol of happiness, good fortune, luck and a sign of future success and prosperity.
Because Paulownia wood is lightweight, strong and rot resistant, it was often made into armoires or boxes. It is also said that phoenixes dwell within these trees. In ancient times when a daughter was born, they would plant a Paulownia tree. When the daughter was given away in marriage, they made furniture out of the wood and because of the legend of the phoenix, it was regarded as an auspicious gift.
